25th High School Reunion

Boy, it's been busy for me lately!  It's been difficult to make time for the blog lately.  Thankfully, my husband took the boys golfing and then to Costco today, so I've found myself some relaxation time unexpectedly.

Three weeks ago my husband and I went to our 25th high school reunion.  This dress has been hanging in my closet for almost a year with tags still attached, it is so sad.  I've always felt it was too fancy for going out to dinner around here, but I'm tired of this interesting piece just sitting and not getting any exposure.  I would have preferred to have some sort of pop of color with this outfit, such as a red clutch or red pumps.  I have red pumps, but they have a wood stacked heel, and the wood heel adds too many colors and doesn't work with this dress.  So, I decided I had no other choice than to be matchy-matchy with my my black patent pumps and clutch.

School Uniforms

My boys started attending a new school this year and uniforms are required.  Don't they look studious?  It happens to be that teal is one of my favorite colors, so I am just thrilled with these uniforms.  I'm usually not a polo shirt gal, but I just love our school's colors I just had to get a shirt for me, too.  These photos were taken on the first day of school just after Labor Day.  I can't wait until their heather grey letterman sweaters arrive.  I'll post photos of the boys wearing them as soon as they arrive and the weather is cool enough for wearing sweaters.  When the weather cools down they will wear black pants. These are the formal uniforms that are worn on Mondays.  The other days of the week they wear polo shirts like mine.

Navy, Green & Fuchsia: Nothing To Be Afraid Of

Recently one night Beverly Like Hills and I were having dinner. I was wearing this navy with dots tank but with dark denim bermudas, a white linen blazer, a fuchsia cross-body handbag, and gold wedge sandals.  I was telling her that I was thinking of wearing this top with a kelly green blazer, but I was too afraid to try it.  This was way out of my comfort zone.  She said it would work, and that it would rock, and that I should do it and not be scared!  It was the pink dots that had me thinking they wouldn't work well with the bright kelly green, but the pink dots are so minimal they don't compete with the green.  I'm so glad I stepped out of my comfort zone.

I also stepped out of my comfort zone by using the tote with dots even though the top has dots.  I'm thinking this works because the dots are black and not too matchy with the dots in the tank?

This outfit could improve by adding a bracelet in a lighter, mint green.  I wish I had one!

I wore this last night out to our favorite Japanese restaurant with our family to celebrate our 11th anniversary.

Orange & Purple Stripes with White Skinnies

Thank you to Beverly Like Hills for mentioning me in your fantastic, stylish, awesome new blog!  Orange and blue together is totally beautiful, and your version is perfect especially with those beautiful snakeskin sandals.  I believe many of you will recognize Beverly as she used to post as Style Underdog.

My dear friend from elementary through high school who moved away to South Carolina almost twenty years ago - visited a few weeks ago.  It was so fun to hang out again.  We took her to our favorite spots in Laguna Beach and had an awesome time.  I can't wait to see D again hopefully soon at our 25th high school reunion this September.

Color Under Crochet Sweater

My biceps are so sore from doing handstand push-ups in Wednesday's training and then today's was completely brutal, so typing hurts.  The workout today has its own title of The Robin.  The Robin is tough.

The Robin
  • Run 4 laps
  • 25 modified burpees
  • 100 modified push-ups  (My trainer rarely lets us do modified push-ups or burpees.  He's all about making us girls do real boy push-ups.  Only during The Robin he allows modified.)
  • 50 toes-to-bar
  • 200 air squats
  • Run 4 laps
I do this for fashion.  I mean my health.

One Scarf, Three Different Versions

There's this wonderful little fashion boutique in Laguna Beach, C.J. Rose.  I browsed the shop a couple of weeks ago one day while visiting my husband's office which is in the same center and found this beautiful orange, navy, cream and gray printed scarf.  I'm just in love with it.

Version 1 - wore to moms' night out to see Magic Mike:  I wore the navy cardigan in hopes to bring out the little bit of navy floral print in the scarf.

Version 2 - wore this to take boys to karate:  I wanted to try wearing the scarf in a different way; without the drab navy cardigan; and bring out the navy in a different way by wearing glittery navy flats.

Version 3 - the next morning after I wore version 2, I woke up realizing I probably needed to bring out the orange somehow, and I remembered my orange skinny belt and tucked in the tee this time.  Threw on the clothes and sunglasses to hide my no-makeup eyes and caught my hubby before he took off to work to take the photos.

1st Product Review - Kipling Handbags

I am very excited to announce I've been asked to do my first product review of Kipling handbags!  Just so you know, I would only review products I would consider purchasing.

Kipling handbags offer that chic, casual look that would perk up any outfit.  My favorite is the Alvar Medium Shoulder Bag in Bright Purple.

The purple hue seems like it gives just the right amount of punch, and the color could go spring or fall.  The color is quite versatile since it could be worn year-round, don't you think?  The adjustable strap is quite functional, the zippered compartments will keep your things organized.
I can't seem to decide which is my favorite feature of this bag:
1.  The Original Furry Kipling Monkey (my 8 & 6 year olds would adore
this Kipling Monkey)
2.  The fact that this bag actually has twp PEN compartments!  I always wanted a bag with a pen compartment, this feature is not an easy find!  It seems I'm always searching frantically through the zippered compartments and the bottom of my bag looking for a pen.  This bag would definitely solve the problem.

Here you can find see the entire Kipling Bags collection and for my UK readers too can buy them from Collectables.

Orange & Blue Will Love Each Other Forever

I'm excited that I've been able to remix my orange colored denim so much this season.  I've been trying to get away from too much cardigan-wearing, and with the hot and humid weather lately, I really don't need cardis.  Button-downs have become my favorite types of shirts lately, especially this one by Caslon, the 'Boyfriend Shirt'.  It is slightly sheer and very light-weight.  The best thing about it:  it's not too long.  I love it when shirts and tops come in petite and regular sizes.  I have one in white and in this indigo color.  The only complaint I have about the shirt is that when I roll-up the sleeves, they don't stay unless I button at least one of the cuff buttons.  When I do button one and roll it, it hurts my wrists.

Orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel.  Aren't they gorgeous together?  I just can't seem to stop wearing orange and blue (or navy) together.

The location of my skinny belt is on the actual belt loops.  In the recent past I never would have considered wearing a belt below my natural waist along with partially "tucking" in a blousy shirt.  I decided to try it again after a copycat Kendi tucking disaster, and  I think this time the tucking works.

Copycat Quinn from Glee

Guess what?  I hunted down another outfit I saw on TV.  Here's the outfit on Quinn. I found her outfit very interesting because of the mixing of the dots and pop of green stripes.  The most difficult part of hunting down the outfit were the shoes.  Jeez.  What a story.

Since she was not shown carrying a handbag, I was clueless what to do.  Since I did not have Quinn's green headband, I think my clutch works since it has a lime green trim all around the outside of the bag.  The color just doesn't show that much in the photo.  It really is nice in person.  I also have earrings on that are light green.

My husband really likes this photo below.  I was trying to think of what to do differently with my pose.

Later that day our family rented a duffy boat in Newport Beach.  I ditched the blazer and added my green straw hat.

California Mission at San Juan Capistrano

Last weekend we finally got around to using the Groupon I purchased months ago to visit the Mission at San Juan Capistrano.  It's sad that this was the very first time I've ever been there, and I've lived in Orange County my entire life.   It was difficult not to post all the photos.  My husband had a good time with this incredible background.

I like this neutral scarf against the bright pink, but the skirt and bag look blah.  Perhaps a scarf with a bolder print would have made the outfit more interesting.  Or a white skirt would have brightened things up a bit.  Oh, I think my white handbag would have worked.  Most of the time I'm rushing out and don't have time to change bags.  Ah, well!

Copycat Miss Y, the Student Teacher

This outfit was worn back in May.... I just realized it didn't get posted.  This is a copycat outfit of my son's student teacher.  I wish I had a photo of her in the outfit.  The scarf is the same, but she wore a yellow short-sleeve sweater and silver flats.  I put my own spin on the outfit by wearing gold flats and my coral zip-up cardi.

Thanks to Miss Y. for the inspiration!  Good luck with your teaching career.  You did a great job teaching this year!

Nordstrom Employee Outfit

I can't believe I've let most of June go by and only have one post on my blog prior to this one.  This means I have too many things going on.  Or wait, maybe it's just that I'm addicted to House Hunters.  I've been watching House Hunters since the show debuted in 1999.  I think it's hysterical that the show made the news recently.

These photos were taken the day after I actually wore the outfit.  I got too busy and then the sun went down, so I missed out on the opportunity to get photographed.  So I woke up early the next day and threw on yesterday's outfit before my husband left for golf lessons.  The following photos were taken at 7am.  I have quite the groggy look in the second photo.

Last Satuday, on the real day I wore this outfit, I felt really good wearing it.  I was at the mall for part of the day, and four people asked me if I worked at Nordstrom.  Two of them were Nordstrom employees.  One of them asked me what department I worked in.  I told her t.b.d., and she believed me.

Copycat Kendi #2

This is my copycat version of Kendi's "Something New" post from back in April.  The mint green and red together look so amazing on her it made me want to try these colors together.  I already had the jeans and tee, I just had to find a necklace that would work with this outfit.  I really tried to find the exact one Kendi wore, but hers is from 2010 Anthropologie.  I see one on Ebay, but it isn't the same color, and it wouldn't work as well with this outfit because of the white in the necklace.  I found a similar one, though I wish this necklace were longer.  It was really important that the necklace had two shades of green.  I looked forever it seems.

I went out of my comfort zone with this necklace for sure.  This necklace is big and chunky, and not what I usually wear for accessories. And now I'm comfortable with chunky statement necklaces!  You just gotta try once.

My version does not have red suede pumps or a cute heart tote as Kendi's or any other handbag with red in it.  I have one pair of red shoes, and they are patent leather peep-toe pumps with wood-stacked heels.  I tried them on with this outfit, but the shine of the patent leather just doesn't work with the red jeans.  Suede is so much more subdued, and  they would not take away from the red jeans, they would blend right in.  Instead I have brown sandals and my casual leather khaki handbag.  My accessories don't work as well, but I worked with what I already have.

If I only had to get one new item to copy a Kendi outfit, than I'm totally excited.  I know I'll be able to remix this necklace.  I have a bunch of ideas of how to wear this thing.  Francesca's has the cutest necklaces and scarves.  I've never heard of this store until Kendi's blog.  I recently discovered there's one in my closest mall, and I definitely like the price point.

It was chilly this day so I put on the denim jacket.  It doesn't really help the outfit, but it did keep me warm.

100th post - Copycat Point Of View Mannequin #1

This marks my 100th post!

Last March, I copied this outfit exactly from a mannequin in the Point Of View department at my local Nordstrom.  It was the beautiful wood and clear acrylic bead necklace that did me in.  Then I thought it would be fun to wear the two different shades of green together - it would really take me out of my comfort zone.  Now I'm very comfortable wearing a lot of color at once.  I just had to try it once and now I'm hooked.

A note to some of my friends in the moms' group:  some of you have seen this outfit once already - I wore this outfit to our first day of wine tasting in Temecula.

On the mannequin:  Focusing could have been better on my iPhone.

On me:

Some notes on the outfit:
1.  It's interesting how in the mannequin photo, the color of the pants look like a darker turquoise.
2.  The cropped pants is a stretch for me since I'm a shorter person.  I suggested to the alterations lady that I should have them hemmed, and she agreed.  In comparison with the mannequin, mine still look too long.  Perhaps they would look more flattering if the hem hit right at the middle of my calf as it does on the mannequin.  I think I'll take them in to be hemmed up a bit more.
3.  My blue nail polish on my toes sort of continues the color blocking shades of greens into blues.
4.  I guessed I should wear nude shoes.  I think I made a good choice.
5.  I was wearing a gold/hematite bracelet, but I forgot to put it back on after doing the dishes.  I keep repeating that note it seems.
6.  My favorite part of this outfit is the necklace.  It has just the right amount of texture which mimics the slightly textured plain sweater.
7.  Oops!  The right hand on the mannequin is facing the wrong direction.  My husband noticed this.
8.  No, I have not had treatment yet for my vericose veins.  Then where are they, you ask?  Photoshop took care of them for this post.

Mother's Day

I did not mean to let this blog sit for so long without posting.  The boys' schedule after school has been really hectic lately, plus I added a third day with my fitness trainer.  My mother's day was really awesome.  I spent lunch with my family at Fashion Island at my favorite restaurant, Mariposa in Neiman Marcus.  I've lived here my whole life, but I've never known about this little gem until this year.  It is such a lovely place.  This is going to be my destination every Mother's Day from now on.  After walking around the mall after lunch, we met my family (my mom, dad & sisters) later for dinner near my mom's house.  It was a lovely day!  Get ready for a long post with lots of photos.

This dress has been sitting in my closet waiting for a special occasion.  I bought it in January.  I don't know why I do this.  It's just a wrap dress, no big deal, right?  I should have been wearing it all through this spring, but I never felt I had an opportunity to wear it until I had a nice place to go.  Also, I need the weather to be warm to wear a dress.  There's this particular necklace I wanted to wear with it but I had to wait for it to get fixed.  I didn't even get it fixed in time after all, so I couldn't even wear the necklace until the second wearing of the dress, which is the last photo below.  The wedges I've had for awhile and I could have worn them with other outfits, but they are special and I wanted them to be worn first with this particular dress.  I don't know why I do this, but after a particular piece has been worn with a certain outfit first, then I feel free to wear it all the time.  I know it's crazy.  I feel I have to wait for something special probably because I put so much time and effort in finding a particular piece that is low stock and so difficult to find at the sale price I want to at least wear it to a nice place for the first time.  Does anyone else feel this way???  Probably not.  :/

DVF wrap dress.  The fit and quality of this wrap dress is so amazingly awesome.   Huge thanks to the salesperson at Neiman Marcus who caught this dress right as it was being boxed up to go to the outlet store, Last Call by Neiman Marcus.  She had to search for a while to locate it.  She called me back once to say it couldn't be found, and then she called two hours later to tell me she had it in her hand.  I was so worried the dress would not be in good condition, but it was in perfect condition.  No snag, no stain, no wrinkle, no nothing.  Oh, and she let me have it for the outlet price.  Amazing woman, let me tell you.

Neiman Marcus gave all the mothers a lovely gift of larger sized fragrance samples.  This made me very happy, because Marc Jacobs Daisy is my favorite!

I forget the name of the delicious blood orange champagne cocktail that went perfectly with our prefix lunch, but here it is.

Had to include a close-up.  I'll be ordering this drink again.

I'm really happy with how my eyeshadow turned out.

Borrowed my son's balloon.

Very cool and modern decor at Mariposa Restaurant.  The food is divine, too.

My boys.

Outside at Fashion Island.  I thought wearing wedge sandals and carrying a larger handbag would make the outfit more casual.

My mom and two sisters.  What happened to my bangs?

I intended to wear the necklace below for Mother's Day, but it was not ready until a few days later.  I finally got to wear it to a show at the Laguna Playhouse last Wednesday.  I first saw the DVF dress online at Bloomingdale's, the model is shown wearing this necklace.  Here is the model wearing the DVF dress and this  pretty fashion forward necklace.  I would consider this almost a mixing of prints.  Normally I would go a safer route and wear a simple silver or gold pendant to not take away from the print of the dress, but I wanted to go outside my comfort zone and wear one that has pizazz that works with the print.  After a lot of hunting around, I finally learned the name of the brand and found the necklace.   Unfortunately, in reality it is on a long chain, not a short one.  It took two jewelry repair shops to remove the charms and put them on a shorter chain.  I am so glad I went out of my comfort zone in wearing this super-fun necklace!  House of Harlow 1960 is by Nicole Richie.  The collection is awesome.  You can see it here.

I really wanted to copy the exact sandals too, from the model's photo, but after a great deal of searching I could not even get the name brand.  Bloomingdales.com did not know the name brand of the shoe, and they said sometimes the models wear their own shoes.  I gave up searching.
